Types of Steel Materials

Steel is the backbone for heavy equipment, household items and tools. It plays a significant role in construction and manufacturing. Steel is not created equal. The type of steel that you select can have a profound impact on the strength and durability of your project.

While all steels start as carbon and iron the quantity of impurities and the additions determine how each is classified. This is what makes each kind distinct for specific applications.

Low-carbon steels, which are available in various forms, are the most frequently employed steels by metal fabricators. They can be found in pipes, beams, and other structural elements. They’re also ideal for welded fabrications because they can be easily shaped and formed without losing its strength or quality.

Medium-carbon steels contain less than 1.75 percent carbon content and are recognized for their hardness. They are the ideal choice for cookware and durable tools. They are also employed to create parts for cars and other mechanical equipment.

High-carbon steels have more than 1.7 percent carbon. They are often used to make components that require exceptional strength and resistance to corrosion. This includes tools, anchor bolts, and rods.

Alloy steels offer a wide range of useful properties that can be modified to suit the needs of each specific application. For instance, tungsten could improve the strength of temperature and wear-resistance of high-strength alloy steels. Chromium increases the resistance to heat of stainless steels and also improves their ductility. Molybdenum on however, increases the hardness and toughness of alloy steels.
